What would transportation look like for you? For some, it looks like paying out a significant amount of their income for neighbors and friends to drive them places. For others, it looks like taking the bus. But what if you begin your work day before the buses begin running, or after the buses stop running for the night? What if you live in an area of Macon where there is not a bus stop nearby? What if you live in an area of Macon where the buses only run once or twice a day? What if you need to get somewhere on Sundays when there is no bus service? How would you get to work, the grocery store, to doctor's appointments, access social services, or participate in a faith community? This is a significant barrier for many Macon residents. Over 1/3 of Macon's population does not have a valid driver's license; fewer have access to a vehicle. While the Macon Transit Authority provides a vital service to the community, for many it is not enough. Made possible by the support of Knight Foundation and 880 Cities, Re-Cycle Macon is a program CCMI organized in partnership with Bike Tech and Bike Walk Macon to get bicycles to under-resourced individuals in Macon lacking dependable transportation. A bicycle is by no means a permanent solution, but it is an important stopgap measure that can supplement walking and riding public transportation. These figures are higher among low income adults at 26% and underserved populations like the ALICE families we serve in our Financial Outreach ministry (asset-limited, income constrained, and employed). This is doubled in homeless and food insecure populations like our Community Breakfast participants. If 30 people pledged to give a gift of $50 every month, that would cover the cost of our Community Breakfast expenses for one year. A $150 monthly pledge could keep at least 10 families from falling behind on a utility bill this year alone.
